more than one server with the same domain...how?

I will be providing free webspace to my members of my community, but one server may not be able to support all those sites....Is it possible to setup 2-3 servers, but still be able to use the same domain?

Example:

Server 1 hosts mainsite (example.com)

Member site URL's would be - example.com/username

Now all sites that are put on Server 2 would still need the same type of url - example.com/username

How would I be able to do this?

Also am I able to setup something like this if each server is by different providers and would I need root access or could I do this with a shared hosting plan as well?
