FTP Hangs after installing APF/BFD

I recently installed APF/BFD on my server and since then I experience a noticiable lag when moving about in FTP on any account on the server. I am not getting connection refused errors; it just takes about 10-15 seconds to perform certain actions (change folders, chmod, etc).

I did doublecheck that the FTP port (21) was included; is there anything else I can tweak to speed things up a bit?
