Correcting errors on a drive

I know this isn't a server-related question, but I really hope someone here can help me. I'm fixing someone's laptop and it came preinstalled with Windows ME. I bought a copy of Windows 2000 (I don't think XP would run too well considering the specs). I booted from the CD, then at the partition management screen I deleted the current partition and instructed it to create a new NTFS partition. Almost immediately I received an erorr message stating this wouldn't be possible.. possibly the disk is damaged.

Disheartened, I booted a copy of Knoppix Linux from CD and used mke2fs to format the drive. Success. I then instructed fsck to find and fix any errors. No errors. I copied a few files to the drive and checked them to make sure I could write, which worked fine.

Now I'm at a loss. I'm fixing the laptop for this guy as a favor, and I really can't get anywhere now. Does anyone have any ideas?

P.S. I tried scandisk from a DOS and Win98 bootdisk, but it failed when it tried to read the drive.
