dnscache - djbdns - errors and confusion

Hello,

I'm trying to install dnscache (from djbdns). I've read several online tutorials and it ought to be very easy. Everything I've done during install follows these tutorials including the patches. It appears from messages output that it is all installed correctly. Nothing came up to say 'error'.

However, it's not running and when I try to do svscan or svstat etc I do get errors that seem to be related to permissions. But there wasn't any explicit permsion commands during the install so maybe I was supposed to know something I don't...?

The errors I get are: (the final aprt of this repeats adnauseam)

]# svscan status
svscan: fatal: unable to chdir to status: file does not exist
# svscan
supervise: fatal: unable to acquire command/supervise/lock: not a directory
supervise: fatal: unable to acquire compile/supervise/lock: not a directory
supervise: fatal: unable to start src/run: file does not exist
Wrong working directory.

/service exists. I assume that svscan is already running.

also triied ...

# svc -u dnscache
svc: warning: unable to chdir to dnscache: file does not exist
#

There is no recognizable related process running when I do ps aux.
In fact anything I try ends with some 'unable' to do type error.

Background:
This machine has named (BIND) on it but I've shut it down in order to replace it with dnscache only. The machine is a P4 running Virtuozzo and I'm one of the VPSs on the machine. The installed os is Centos 3 and the kernal is 2.4.20something.

I'm not an expert on Linux but I have used it for a while and know some things and at least the basics anyway. If one of you experts out there can see what's likely wrong it would sure help as I struggle to get this upa nd going.

BTW the reason for setting up dnscache si that I'm limited to 64MB memory on this machine and I figure for my small needs it will likely be a memory saver doing this. Anything not wasted on bind is going to be useful to mysql...

Thanks!
