Need help, potential hardware failure

Recently my Windows XP machine has been randomly locking up. Sometimes I'm surfing but sometimes I'm not doing anything at all. Event Viewer is showing the following two errors occurring regularly:

An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom1 during a paging operation.

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

I can chkdsk and indeed there were errors on my hard disk, so I had it repair those errors. But the machine continues to freeze. I'm thinking my hard drive is starting to fail, and I'm ready to replace it, but what's with the CD-ROM drive errors?
