A Really Basic Question...

I've just been confronted with a basic task which I've never faced before: formatting a PC and re-installing Windows (XP).

Does anyone have any sort of idiots abc list for this?

I simply want to do a low level format of the drive (it's riddled with viruses) and then re-install the OS ready to go, but don't know the commands for the former, or how to do the latter (presumably just stick the CD in and execute).

Can anyone offer directions?
