Planning a new backup file server

I'm thinking about building a new backup file server. I'm basically wondering which sata/ata raid card is the most suitable to use in a linux (debian) box. Im going to put 8 drives in there, using raid 5.

I really don't want to have to compile kernel modules for drivers etc if i dont have to. I would like to be able to boot of of this thing if thats possible.
