configuring my DSL modem (networking questoin)

Hi,

I have an ethernet DSL modem (D-Link DSL-300g). This device contains two ports: on to connect it to the phone line, and the other one is a crossed RJ45 socket.

I connected the modem to my switch, and configured its IP address and netmask to match those of my network.

I configured the modem (using its web based configuration interface), and the modem was able to connect to the Internet.

I then logged into the modem using telnet and pinged an IP address in the Internet, everything went fine.

The problem now is, how do I configure my machine to connect to the Internet correctly through this modem?

I've set the modems IP as the default gateway in my machine, but still nothing works. I pinged the same host, the packets seem to be getting to the modem and then to the Internet, but nothing comes back (I keep getting a "Request timed out" message).

The reason, I think, for this problem is simple: my machine is sending its own IP address, which is a private one.

My DSL provider only gives me a single IP address to use. If I set my computer now so that it uses the Internet IP address, how will the modem know that when the packets come back, they should be sent to the switch?

The modem firmware doesn't have any NAT or firewalling support.

Thanks in advance,
Ahmad
