DNS Help: SOA
Ok i need a little help with DNSwhat does the SOA record do???
do you set it to the hostname of the server, or do you set it to your first name server? like ns1.mydomain.com
my guess is that its used if you have your name servers on different machines, like ns1.yourdomain.com in say the UK then ns2.yourdomain.com in say the US and you set the SOA to that particular name server
so on ns1.yourdomain.com you set the SOA to ns1.yourdomain.com and on ns2.yourdomain.com you set it to ns2.yourdomain.com
is that right?
and then if you have just one server handling multiple name servers you just set the SOA to ns1.yourdomain.com
this is all that im confused about
i've never known what the SOA is for, and so far i've just had it set to ns1.mydomain.com.
so if anyone can help that would be great
