Upgrading to PHP5 on VPS account

Anyone have any tips on how to upgrade my current php4 to php5 in my VPS account? I need PHP5 to run my own application. I have uploaded PHP5 to one of my ftp account. Haven't move to the root yet. So after uploading, what should I do now?
