Efficient and secure forum software

In another forum, I read the comment: phpBB is notoriously poorly coded and is a performance disaster on shared hosting platforms.

I host a few sites using a reseller account and have been considering adding a forum to one of the sites. What forum software do you experts recommend which would be secure, efficient and not require access rights that I don't have using cPanel? Preferably it should be easy to set up and maintain, too, since I am not an expert.
